Toccoa River Swinging Bridge

Toccoa Swinging BridgeThe Toccoa Swinging Bridge over the Toccoa River is the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi River stretching over 265 feet long from one end to the other. If you’re planning a trip to the Aska Adventure Trail Area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you won’t want to leave until you’ve had the opportunity to walk this swinging bridge for some thrills and spectacular views. This ‘road to the forest’ offers a scene that is difficult to put into words. Picture a river winding through the thick of the forest with towering Pines watching over huge boulders, and small pebbles being whisked away by the force of the river’s current. You can almost hear the water talk as the boulders sit in strong silence, while nature unveils the anticipated masterpiece.

Your first steps on the bridge might seem a bit shaky, hence the reason why it has earned the name “Swinging Bridge”, but have no fear, this bridge is constructed of large timbers and is quite sturdy.  The bridge is around 14 miles beginning from Benton McKaye Trail at Springer Mountain. Crossing to the other side offers many places to explore including secluded picnic sites, and areas to wade in due to the shallow waters. Don’t forget your camera!

History of the Toccoa Swinging Bridgewizard-apprentice

If you google the bridge with intentions of finding out any history, you won’t find out much except who built the bridge, and the year the bridge was built. Only recently a new bit of information was revealed by some local old timers. Sometime during the 1970’s developers were planning on extending the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way to Atlanta. The proposed Parkway would follow the same path as the Appalachian Trail. The Trail would need to be moved to accommodate hikers. If the trail was relocated folks needed some way to safely cross the swift Toccoa River, so the Toccoa Swinging Bridge was constructed in 1977 making a safe passage for all who chose to travel those parts. As it turned out plans for the Blue Ridge Parkway changed and the Appalachian Trail remains in the same location today. Although the bridge can only be experienced on foot, many campers enjoy resting their heads on either side of the river. Planning ahead is an absolute must if you wish to secure a spot for camping.
